Taika Waititi Comments on Fans Shipping Captain Marvel and Valkyrie

Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in 2021, marking the first time that an MCU character is getting a fourth installment in his or her own solo series. Although continuing past three movies often spells doom for a franchise, Taika Waititi seems like he can handle it. The returning Thor: Ragnarok director is currently earning praise for the inventiveness of his latest effort, Jojo Rabbit. While speaking with WIRED about that film, Waititi once again teased his plans for Love and Thunder. He also reflected on a popular fan theory that’s been making the rounds for several months.

Waititi recently confirmed that the upcoming sequel’s script is complete. After putting his own colorful stamp on the God of Thunder in 2017, it’s hard to imagine how he could top himself. But apparently, this is exactly why he accepted the job in the first place.

“It’s going to be bigger and louder and more bombastic,” said Waititi. “It’s only interesting to me if we’re doubling down on how nuts Ragnarok was.”

Love and Thunder also features the return of Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, who became Queen of Asgard at the end of Avengers: Endgame. It’s been known for a while that Valkyrie is the MCU’s first openly LGBTQ superhero. Plus, Thompson herself even suggested that her character “needs to find her queen” in her next onscreen adventure. A number of fans responded to this by nominating Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel as a worthy candidate. It turns out that Waititi is well aware of these shippers. However, he implied that he won’t be giving in to fan demands.

“The thing is, I think it’s dangerous for people to say too much about what they want with Marvel, because then they will tend to go the other way,” Waititi added. “You want to listen to the fans to a point. But also you don’t want to have a completely fan-made film because then it doesn’t feel like there’s any point. You want to have people surprised.”
