David Ayer Says Gotham City Sirens Is On Hold

Harley Quinn may be back in next month’s Birds of Prey, but her other Gotham City movie may not be happening anytime soon. Via Slashfilm, Suicide Squad director David Ayer was asked about the Gotham City Sirens movie. And his response doesn’t leave much hope for its immediate future.

“No, I think it’s on pause,” said Ayer.

The film would have placed Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn with a team of female supervillains, including Poison Ivy. While that won’t be hitting theaters in the immediate future, Ayer is still up for another comic book movie.

I love the world creation of it and I love the power of the IP and the fans,” noted Ayer. “It’s dangerous. It’s like juggling chainsaws, but I am drawn to it and it’s definitely an arena I’ll play in again.”

Ayer also noted that he could have worked on The Suicide Squad before the project went to Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.

“I had a chance to do it, but I went another way,” explained Ayer.

Last month, Ayer endorsed Gunn’s vision for The Suicide Squad and explained why it’s not actually a sequel to his film. Ayer also noted that his sequel to the Netflix fantasy/cop film, Bright, was “still in development.”
