Scott Derrickson Departs Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Back in 2016, director Scott Derrickson introduced the mystical side of the MCU in Doctor Strange. While Derrickson had been tapped to return for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, things have apparently changed. Via Variety, Derrickson and Marvel have gone in different directions. Although Derrickson will remain as an executive producer, he will no longer be directing the Doctor Strange sequel.

Marvel acknowledged Derrickson’s departure in an official statement that cited “creative differences” as the reason.

“Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences. We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU.”

According to Variety, this won’t disrupt plans for the film’s production. In the Multiverse of Madness will start shooting in May, and Marvel Studios is already looking for a new director. Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Doctor Stephen Strange. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Benedict Wong will presumably return. However, the only other role confirmed for the film is Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff. Last summer, Marvel revealed that the Disney+ series WandaVision will lead into the film. Additionally, the Loki series will also feature a tie-in with the film.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 7, 2021.
