The Rise of Skywalker Writer Says It Had Most Rewrites He’s Ever Done

To give a proper conclusion to an epic saga like Star Wars is no easy job. But perhaps Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker writer Chris Terrio couldn’t have imagined that it would require so much work to do in order to tie things up. In The Art of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker art book, Terrio revealed that it was the first time he had to change the script for a movie so much (via Business Insider). While the writer undoubtedly anticipated some rewrites as per usual, he did not anticipate how many.

“I’ve never rewritten a film as much as this one,” Terrio said. “It’s like a tide. There’s a new script every morning. But we just keep going at it and going at it, loosely thinking that it’s not good enough. It’s never good enough.”

Terrio then explained that they often had to engage in “course-correcting” the script in order to fit the production’s requests.

“Luckily, the production team is so good that they can shift and adjust,” he added. “We’re course-correcting as we go – we’re trying things, and some things don’t work and some things aren’t ambitious enough. Some things are overly ambitious. Some things are too dense. Some things are too simple. Some things are too nostalgic. Some things are too out-of-left-field. We’re finding our balance.”

Ultimately, The Rise of Skywalker didn’t seem to have the same force as the previous installments in the new Star Wars trilogy. It finally landed well behind its predecessors at the box office.
