It’s been nearly a decade since Ridley Scott returned to the world of Alien with Prometheus. And while longtime fans are split on how well that film and its 2017 sequel, Alien: Covenant, stack up against the high bar set by the first two entries in the series, Scott isn’t ruling out the possibility of continuing the story. Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, the director shared his thoughts on the current state of the Alien franchise.
“I still think there’s a lot of mileage in Alien, but I think you’ll have to now re-evolve,” Scott said. “What I always thought when I was making it, the first one, why would a creature like this be made; and why was it traveling in what I always thought was a kind of war-craft, which was carrying a cargo of these eggs. What was the purpose of the vehicle and what was the purpose of the eggs? That’s the thing to question — who, why, and for what purpose is the next idea, I think.”

Last year, Scott’s original Alien film celebrated its 40th anniversary. Around this time, Scott confirmed that he was lined up to direct a third film in the prequel series that began with Prometheus in 2012. But now that Disney owns the Alien brand following last year’s Fox merger, the franchise’s future isn’t as clear. There have also been rumors that Scott is developing at least one new TV series set in the Alien universe. However, these have yet to be confirmed.
