Thor: Love and Thunder Will Use Virtual Production From The Mandalorian

Well, it seems that fans of The Mandalorian will have a familiar feeling when they watch the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder movie. THR brings word that Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic will support the fourth installment in the Thor franchise. Director Taika Waititi will get the chance to work once again with some of the virtual production stage technology developed for the fan-favored show that aired on Disney+ like that large back screen — called StageCraft — that fans could admire in the Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian documentary. Waititi already used virtual production when he helmed The Mandalorian Season 1 finale.

ILM will also build a larger StageCraft at Fox Studios Australia, while also expanding at Manhattan Beach Studios and Pinewood Studios.

“When combined with Industrial Light & Magic’s expert visual effects talent, motion capture experience, facial capture via Medusa, Anyma, and Flux, and the innovative production technology developed by ILM’s newly integrated Technoprops team, we believe we have a unique offering for the industry,” said the head of ILM, Rob Bredow, in a statement.

Actress Natalie Portman revealed that the movie would start production in Australia shortly after the beginning of next year. The recent news implies that the production team won’t have to go on location as much as in the past. Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder will strike theaters on February 11, 2022.
