The coronavirus pandemic continues to cripple the movie theater industry. Regardless, Warner Bros. and director Patty Jenkins are still committed to premiering Wonder Woman 1984 on the big screen. Amid ongoing safety concerns, several fans have theorized that WB might just bite the bullet and give the sequel a direct-to-streaming or VOD release. But Jenkins herself has officially laid these rumors to rest.
Jenkins was responding to a report on Twitter suggesting that WW84 will be hitting theaters and streaming platforms on Christmas Day. According to Jenkins, she and the studio haven’t even considered the idea of an immediate digital release. You can read what she had to say below.

Even before COVID-19 came along, Wonder Woman 1984 faced a handful of release date changes. Warner Bros. initially planned to premiere the film in December 2019 before moving this up to November 2019. The studio then decided to push back the film’s release to June 5 of this year. But once the virus hit, WB set new August and October dates for the sequel before settling on its current Christmas debut. And because it seems highly unlikely that conditions will improve in the next two months, even this one is tentative at best.
Jenkins has been very vocal about her concerns for the film industry in the months since the outbreak started. She laid out a few of these in a recent interview with Reuters (via Variety), including her feeling that “we could lose movie theater-going forever” if things don’t get better soon.
