The Batman is Using The Mandalorian’s VFX Technology

Last year, The Mandalorian revolutionized the visual effects game with virtual production techniques that make it possible to render VFX sequences in real time. This technology was such a success that the filmmakers behind Lucasfilm’s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series are using it as well. Soon, we’ll see it pop up in the DC Universe too. According to The Hollywood Reporter, ILM’s StageCraft team is working with Warner Bros. and director Matt Reeves on The Batman.

ILM officially launched its StageCraft unit, which specializes in virtual production, earlier this year. The main component of this filmmaking style is The Volume. Essentially, The Volume is a massive LED wall that projects different backgrounds using the Unreal video game engine. ILM’s chief creative officer, Rob Bredow, announced the studio’s involvement with The Batman during this week’s VIEW Conference, the annual event highlighting work in the VFX and animation industries.

Unsurprisingly, Bredow couldn’t reveal any specifics about how The Batman will use StageCraft’s technology. But he did confirm that a new LED wall was built around the film’s practical sets in the U.K. Bredow’s team is also once again collaborating with cinematographer Grieg Fraser on WB’s highly-anticipated reboot. Last month, Fraser scored an Emmy win for his work on The Mandalorian’s first season.

Viewers can next see StageCraft’s work in action when The Mandalorian season 2 hits Disney+ on Friday, October 30. The Batman opens in theaters on March 4, 2022.
