The upcoming Avatar sequels find Kate Winslet reuniting with James Cameron for the first time since Titanic opened in 1997. And once again, the two are spending a lot of time in the water. Winslet is one of several Avatar cast members who learned to free-dive for the new films’ underwater sequences. Now, the series’ official Twitter account has posted a new behind-the-scenes image that shows Winslet filming inside a large water tank. You can check it out for yourself below.
From Kate Winslet’s recent interview in @THR: “I had to learn how to free-dive to play that role in Avatar, and that was just incredible. My longest breath hold was seven minutes and 14 seconds, like crazy, crazy stuff.” pic.twitter.com/ZYAmZdNgHS

Winslet will appear in Avatar 2 as a Na’vi named Ronal, a member of the Metkayina clan on Pandora. This group resides on the moon’s reefs and is led by Tonowari, who will be played by Cliff Curtis in the film. As the tweet’s caption shows, Winslet’s training definitely paid off, allowing her to hold her breath for several minutes. The sequel marks her first time working with performance capture. However, it’s not clear why she’s holding that sheet in the photo. Does this mean that the Metkayina have wings that make them more aerodynamic underwater? We won’t know the answer to this until we finally get to see some finished footage from the movie.

For the last few years, Cameron has teased that the Avatar sequels will utilize groundbreaking filming technology for their underwater scenes. Even the young actors playing Jake and Neytiri’s children (some as young as seven years old) participated in the same free-diving classes that their older co-stars took. Last month, the films’ Twitter page shared a similar image of Sigourney Weaver filming inside a tank.
Avatar 2 will hit theaters on December 16, 2022.
