MGM Enlists Misha Green To Write and Direct Tomb Raider 2

After months of uncertainty over Lara Croft’s future, MGM has selected a new filmmaker to bring her back to theaters. According to Deadline, the studio has hired Misha Green to write and direct Tomb Raider 2. The film will also feature Alicia Vikander reprising her role as Lara from the 2018 reboot.

This announcement is rather surprising, since the studio previously recruited Ben Wheatley to helm the sequel in September of 2019. MGM also hired Wheatley’s wife, Amy Jump, to write the screenplay. But it looks like the studio wants to go in a different direction with Green starting over from scratch. This marks the first Tomb Raider 2 news since MGM took the film off its release calendar last October.

Green is best known as the executive producer and showrunner behind HBO’s Lovecraft Country, which premiered last year. She wrote or co-wrote all 10 episodes of the show’s first season and directed the eighth episode, “Jig-a-Bobo.” Before Lovecraft Country, Green co-created WGN America’s Underground and also worked as a writer on Heroes and Sons of Anarchy. The Tomb Raider sequel will be her feature directorial debut.

MGM originally planned a 2020 start date for Tomb Raider 2 with an eye to release the film this March. Unfortunately, this was before the coronavirus came into play, which caused a shift in the studio’s schedule. Last fall, Vikander indicated that the sequel could start filming this year. But it’s not clear if this is still the plan in light of recent events.

MGM still hasn’t set a new release date for Tomb Raider 2.
