Joe Barton Will Write Paramount’s Cloverfield Sequel

After more than 10 years and two “spiritual successors,” J.J. Abrams is finally ready to make a proper follow-up to Cloverfield. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount and Abrams’ Bad Robot have recruited Joe Barton to write the script for a sequel to the 2008 found-footage monster movie.

Earlier this month, Warner Bros. hired Barton to spearhead HBO Max’s upcoming Gotham PD-centric TV series. This series will take in the same universe as The Batman. He replaced the project’s original showrunner, Terence Winter. Barton previously created the BBC Two/Netflix series Girl/Haji and also wrote Netflix’s The Ritual.

Directed by Matt Reeves and written by Drew Goddard, Cloverfield opened in 2008. Its release was memorably preceded by a viral marketing campaign that kicked off with the premiere of the film’s first teaser trailer, which played before screenings of Transformers in the summer of 2007. For months, the trailer was a prime source of fascination among moviegoers, mainly because it neglected to reveal the film’s title. Instead, all viewers had to speculate on was Abrams’ involvement as a producer and its infamous release date: “1-18-08.”

Cloverfield was well-received when it finally hit theaters and managed to gross over $172 million against a $25 million budget. Naturally, this led several fans to wonder about the possibility of a sequel. However, Abrams later turned his attention to producing new films under the Cloverfield banner that had little to no connection to the original. First came 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016, followed by The Cloverfield Paradox in 2018.
