So far, most of Eli Roth’s casting choices for his Borderlands adaptation have caused longtime fans of the original video game series to raise an eyebrow. But here’s a decision that just about everyone should be able to get behind. According to Variety, Roth has added Jack Black to the film’s cast as the voice of the robot Claptrap.
In the games, Claptrap is a general purpose robot manufactured by the Hyperion corporation on Pandora. He’s also known for his overeager personality. Although he was a non-playable character in the main Borderlands trilogy, gamers could control him in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. David Eddings provided the robot’s voice in the first two games, plus The Pre-Sequel and Telltale Games’ Tales from the Borderlands spinoff. However, Jim Foronda took over as the character starting with Borderlands 3.
Black previously worked with Roth in 2018 on The House With a Clock in Its Walls, which Roth directed. That movie also featured Cate Blanchett, who also has a role in Borderlands as Lilith. As he’s done with other casting announcements, Roth issued a new statement welcoming Black aboard the film.
“I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth,” said Roth. “Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen.”

Lionsgate’s Nathan Kahane also praised Black’s casting in a statement of his own:
“We couldn’t have been more in sync with our filmmakers and casting executives as we approached this role,” said Kahane. “It’s one of the biggest no-brainer casting decisions we’ve ever made. Everyone who’s ever played the game knows Jack is perfect for this part. We’re thrilled he will add his endless comic energy and voice to our film — he’ll bring so much to the movie.”
Borderlands’ cast also includes Kevin Hart as Roland and Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis. Lionsgate hasn’t set a release date for the film.
