Last month, Tasha Huo inked a deal to write and executive produce a new Tomb Raider anime series for Netflix. But it looks like Lara Croft isn’t the only female protagonist she’ll be spending time with in the near future. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Millennium Films has drafted Huo to write their long-in-the-works Red Sonja reboot.
Millennium’s take on the She-Devil with a Sword has had a tumultuous road to production. The studio previously hired Bryan Singer to direct the film. But after The Atlantic published an exposé in 2019 that detailed Singer’s long history of sexual abuse allegations, he was dropped from the movie and replaced with Joey Soloway. There hasn’t been a lot of new info on the project since Soloway filled the director’s chair. However, Millennium seems ready to take new strides in finally making the film a reality. Next week, the studio will begin pre-selling the reboot at the European Film Market (EMF) to secure international distribution. The casting process will also begin “immediately.”
Other than her Tomb Raider series, Huo is also part of the writing staff for The Witcher: Blood Origin. That series will act as a prequel to Netflix’s flagship Witcher series starring Henry Cavill and tell the story of the very first Witcher.

Soloway also issued a new statement to share her excitement about Huo coming aboard:
“I have loved Red Sonja forever and I feel so honored to help shepherd her story and start this cinematic journey,” said Soloway. “There could not be a greater moment in our world for Red Sonja‘s ways of wielding power and her connection with nature and our planet. She is an ancient heroine with an epic calling, and translating that to the screen is a dream come true for me as a filmmaker. I can’t wait to collaborate with Tasha on this vision.”
“We’re very excited to be bringing Red Sonja to the market and the world,” added Millennium co-president Jonathan Younger. “This has been a long time coming. Having Joey Soloway at the helm of this feminist icon franchise is the perfect recipe for a magical adventure, which is exactly what the world needs today.”
The Red Sonja reboot is still without a release date.
