New Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters Documentary Seeks Kickstarter Funding

Mike Mignola’s mainstream profile is largely thanks to Hellboy’s appearances on the big screen. Regardless, the cult status of Mignola’s most famous creation has kept him further below the radar than some of his peers in the comic book industry. However, a team of filmmakers are hoping to bring his story to a wider audience next year. But they need some help from his fans in order to pull this off. Via Collider, a new documentary called Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters is in the works, and the directors have just launched a Kickstarter campaign to secure additional funding.

Drawing Monsters comes from co-directors Jim Demonakos and Kevin Hanna. The pair have apparently shot 80 hours of footage over the last year and a half. However, there’s still more work to be done.

“We’re bringing the project to Kickstarter to secure the financing to shoot additional interviews, edit the film and score, and bring the film to market,” explained Demonakos. “We want existing fans and curious readers alike to experience Mignola’s art and his incredible world of monsters and misfits.”

Demonakos and Hanna have also revealed an early trailer for the documentary that teases some of the completed interviews. Fans can expect to see familiar faces like Neil Gaiman, Mythbusters’ Adam Savage, and Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar. Other industry giants like Joe Quesada and Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson will also offer their two cents on Mignola’s enduring legacy. Plus, the directors also spoke with Doug Jones, who played Abe Sapien in Guillermo del Toro’s original Hellboy films, and Vanessa Eichhotlz, who starred as Ilsa Hepstein in the 2019 reboot.

As with all the best Kickstarter campaigns, backers will receive a little something special for donating. Rewards range from a Blu-ray copy of the movie to exclusive artwork drawn by Mignola and other talented artists. You can donate to the campaign here.

Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters will premiere in 2022. You can watch the new trailer for the movie below, then share your thoughts in the comment section!
