Avatar’s Chinese Re-release May Dethrone Avengers: Endgame’s Record

It’s been almost two years since Avengers: Endgame hit theaters and subsequently became the highest-grossing movie of all time. Previously, the top spot belonged to James Cameron’s Avatar. But it looks like Cameron will have another chance to reclaim box office glory later this week. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chinese movie theaters will begin screening Avatar in a variety of formats starting on Friday.

China’s Film Bureau was actually plotting an Avatar re-release last spring after getting a better handle on the COVID-19 crisis. The hope was that new screenings of beloved films would help out movie theaters that were struggling due to the pandemic. But once cases started spiking again, these plans were put on hold. This time, Chinese theaters will also show Avatar in 3D and IMAX 3D as well.

Endgame officially surpassed Avatar’s box office record after raking in over $2.797 billion internationally. Cameron’s film currently holds the number two spot at $2.790 billion, meaning it would need to make slightly less than $7.4 million overseas in order to wrest the crown back from Marvel Studios. But even if the film does pull this off, it probably won’t faze Cameron. The director was gracious when Endgame broke Avatar’s record in 2019. He later claimed that the victory renewed his faith in the theater industry.
