The Kombatants Pick a Side in the New Mortal Kombat Poster

It’s been over 25 years since the original Mortal Kombat movie premiered in theaters, but the franchise is getting a comeback next month. HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures have released a new poster for the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot. Via the official Mortal Kombat Movie Twitter account, the heroes are on the left and the villains are on the right.

The absence of Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) is surprising because he’s usually the main character. Instead, the poster also implies that Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) will be two of the most important characters on each side. However, the real main character may be Cole Young (Lewis Tan), the fighter on the far left. The filmmakers created Cole specifically for this movie. If Cole takes the focus away from the classic characters, old school MK fans may not be pleased. Regardless, it appears that Cole is going to be the primary hero of the reboot.

Here’s the official description of the film:

“A washed-up mixed martial arts fighter named Cole Young is unaware of his hidden lineage or why he is being hunted down by Sub-Zero of the Lin-Kuei clan of assassins. Concerned for the safety of his family, he seeks out a clique of fighters that were chosen to defend Earthrealm in a high-stakes battle against the forces of Outworld.”

Jessica McNamee also stars as Sonya Blade, alongside Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and Max Huang as Kung Lao. Additionally, Chin Han will portray the evil sorcerer, Shang Tsung. Other villains slated to appear include Josh Lawson as Kano, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Daniel Nelson as Kabal, AND Elissa Cadwell as Nitara.

Mortal Kombat will debut on HBO Max and in theaters on April 16.
