Last year’s Mortal Kombat reboot was reportedly one of the most successful launches on HBO Max. That’s why New Line Cinema is now moving forward with a sequel. Deadline is reporting that New Line has hired Moon Knight‘s head writer, Jeremy Slater, to pen the script for Mortal Kombat 2.
Slater’s previous credits include Fox’s reboot of The Exorcist and The Umbrella Academy. He is also slated to write and direct a film called Thread, in addition to writing a new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Tommyknockers.
Simon McQuoid directed the Mortal Kombat reboot from a script by Oren Uziel and Greg Russo. Collectively, they took quite a few liberties with the video game mythos created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. One of the biggest departures from the lore was the introduction of a new lead character, Cole Young. As portrayed by Lewis Tan, Cole was a MMA fighter who discovered that he was destined to fight in the Mortal Kombat tournament. He was also the descendant of an original MK character.

One of the biggest changes in the film was the fact that the tournament never actually started. Instead, Shang Tsung (Chin Han) attempted to hunt down and kill Earthrealm’s champions before they could compete for the fate of their world.
The first film also starred Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Mehcad Brooks as Jax Briggs, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. Not all of those characters survived the previous movie. Deadline’s report also indicates that none of the cast members are currently locked in for the sequel.
