Promising Young Woman Director Will Write DC’s Zatanna Movie

Earlier this month, Warner Bros. informally announced the Zatanna solo movie by including it in HBO Max’s upcoming DC slate. Now, the film officially has a screenwriter. Via Variety, Promising Young Woman director Emerald Fennell has signed on to write Zatanna.

According to the report, Zatanna will be released theatrically as opposed to going direct-to-HBO Max. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions will produce the film for Warner Bros., presumably under Abrams’ deal to develop Justice League Dark characters. The story also notes that Zatanna has not been cast yet.

Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson created Zatanna Zarara in 1964. She is also the daughter of DC’s golden age magician hero, Giovanni “John” Zatara.  Zatanna inherited her father’s magical abilities, and she casts her spells by speaking backwards.

Additionally, Zatanna is a stage magician who frequently goes on tour between stints with the Justice League and the Justice League Dark.  However, she has rarely headlined her own comic book series. Zatanna is primarily a supporting player, but she can carry a story if she has to.

Fennell’s previous credits include the BBC America drama Killing Eve.
