Noah Centineo Leaves Sony’s Masters of the Universe Film

Sony’s long-in-the-works Masters of the Universe reboot is in need of a new He-Man. According to Collider, Noah Centineo is no longer headlining the film as Eternia’s savior.

Centineo had been attached to play He-Man since 2019. A representative for the actor declined to provide a reason for his exit. Regardless, it’s been ages since Sony released any new info about how the film was coming along. The studio originally acquired the rights to Masters of the Universe in 2009. And since then, the project has seen a multitude of writers and directors come and go. As far as we know, Aaron and Adam Nee (Bank Robbers) are still planning to direct the movie and take their own pass at the screenplay as well.

Rumors about Sony’s lack of faith in the project also began to swirl in late 2019 when The Hollywood Reporter claimed that chairman Tom Rothman was thinking about selling the film to Netflix. Apparently, Rothman was worried about releasing another box-office flop after the dismal performance of Men in Black: International, which hit theaters earlier that year. With this, the studio allegedly considered handing distribution rights over to the streaming giant to minimize risk.

All of this happened before Sony announced its latest pact with Netflix earlier this month. Under its terms, Netflix gets first dibs on any films that the studio is planning to go straight to streaming. So in theory, Masters of the Universe could still end up there in the future. But alas, the movie is currently without a release date.

In the meantime, Centineo is still playing Atom Smasher in New Line’s Black Adam film opposite Dwayne Johnson. He also recently inked a deal to star in two new projects for Netflix. One is a movie about this year’s GameStop stock phenomenon from Zero Dark Thirty writer Mark Boal. The other is a new CIA series from executive producer Doug Liman.
