The Pinhead renaissance is upon us. Not only is the leader of the Cenobites starring in a new Hellraiser series on HBO, he’s also about to headline his eleventh feature film. Bloody Disgusting broke the story that Spyglass Media’s Hellraiser remake is going straight to Hulu.
This new take on the Hellraiser mythos comes from director David Bruckner and will presumably have nothing to do with the previous 10 films in the series. Bruckner joined the project last year alongside David S. Goyer, who served as a producer on Bruckner’s The Night House and was originally going to pen the screenplay. However, it appears that Bruckner is now handing script duties over to Night House writers, Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski.

It can also be assumed that Bruckner’s movie has nothing to do with HBO’s Hellraiser TV show. That series comes from co-writers Michael Dougherty and Mark Verheiden. Additionally, the show also has the benefit of having franchise creator Clive Barker onboard as an executive producer. Last December, Barker won a copyright case that allowed him to regain the U.S. rights to both his original Hellraiser screenplay as well as his 1986 novella, The Hellbound Heart, which inspired the film series. Regardless, Barker won’t fully regain the rights until December 19 of this year. So until that time, it seems like Hellraiser project can be made without his approval.
Spyglass still hasn’t announced a release date for the Hellraiser reboot.
