The last time we saw Monica Rambeau on Disney+’s WandaVision, a Skrull agent was about to take her into space to meet with a mysterious “old friend” of her mother’s. Presumably, this is where we’ll catch up with Monica when she returns to the MCU in The Marvels. It certainly helps that Monica now has her own energy powers to fight alongside Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers. And in a new interview with Variety, Teyonah Parris briefly discussed the part that Monica will play in the upcoming sequel.
Parris will reprise her role as the grown-up Monica alongside not just Larson, but also future Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani as well. Balancing the character arcs of three different superheroes doesn’t exactly sound easy. Regardless, Parris has faith in director Nia DaCosta, whom she recently worked with on Universal’s Candyman reboot. She also stressed how important it is for a Black woman to handle Monica’s story.
“First of all, I’m just such a fan of her as a human,” said Parris. “Then you have her visual, very artistic eye on how a film feels with her. With Monica, we’ve established who she is in WandaVision, and in The Marvels, we have an opportunity to further understand who this woman is. Having a woman of color at the helm of furthering this story of one of the few super-powered female, African-American beings, I think it’s really special.”

Parris also teased some friction between Monica and Carol in the film, which isn’t a surprise. When Captain Marvel was name-dropped in WandaVision’s fifth episode, Monica looked noticeably upset. A number of fans have theorized that Monica might harbor ill feelings toward Carol over not being there for her mother during her battle with cancer. Another fan theory is that Carol’s Kree superpowers somehow gave Maria the disease in the first place. Whatever the case, it sounds like The Marvels will definitely bring viewers up to speed on their falling out.
“Little Monica had a relationship with Carol Danvers,” added Parris. “And we’ll get to see what happens with that relationship, and how or if, it brings them to the present.”
The Marvels will hit theaters on November 11, 2022.
