Scarlett Johansson Reflects on Leaving Black Widow Behind Her

In just a few weeks, the Black Widow movie will be Scarlett Johansson’s final appearance as Natasha Romanoff in the MCU. During Avengers: Endgame, Natasha sacrificed her life to allow Hawkeye to take the Soul Stone. Regardless, Black Widow takes place before Infinity War and Endgame, which gave Johansson one more chance to headline her own Marvel movie.

During a recent interview with Comic Book, Johansson admitted that it feels bittersweet to say goodbye to Natasha. However, she is at peace with concluding Black Widow’s story.

“Honestly, I feel like it’s always, it feels great to leave a party when it’s still raging and I think that this film [Black Widow] feels very much like it’s alive and fresh and powerful and I feel really pleased with it. I feel really happy with the work that we’ve done for this decade of time and, you know, it’s bittersweet to say, ‘Goodbye,’ but if you love something, you need to set it free!”

Within the comics, Natasha Romanoff was killed during the Secret Empire event. But she returned as a clone with all of Natasha’s memories shortly thereafter. If Marvel and Johansson chose to leave Natasha in the grave, then Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova will carry on the Black Widow’s legacy by herself.

Black Widow hits theaters and Disney+ Premier Access on July 9.
