Black Adam Producer Says New FX Will Be Used To Convey His Powers

Next summer, Black Adam won’t just mark the live-action debut of Shazam’s archenemy. It could also usher in a new era of blockbuster filmmaking. Producer Hiram Garcia promised as much during a recent interview with Collider, claiming that the upcoming DC movie uses proprietary visual effects techniques to bring Black Adam’s powers to life.

It’s true that we’ve seen most of Black Adam’s superhuman abilities on the big screen before. But according to Garcia, the film’s VFX team is working extra hard to make sure that some of these powers, whether it’s his flight, his speed, or his strength, don’t “fall to the wayside” like they do in other superhero movies.

“The technology we’re using to make Black Adam fly has never been done before,” said Garcia. “It’s completely unique. It was critical for us to ensure that it felt special, authentic and real. [Director] Jaume [Collet-Serra] took that to heart. Our special effects team are Oscar winners, and we certainly put them to work.”

Garcia also briefly mentioned Black Adam’s rating, which will likely be PG-13. Although an R-rating was considered, the filmmakers ultimately decided that it “wasn’t necessary” to do the character justice. But more importantly, Garcia discussed how closely the film will connect to other DCEU entries. Shazam! certainly set the stage for a showdown between Zachary Levi’s title character and Dwayne Johnson’s anti-hero. However, it sounds like Black Adam is more concerned with fleshing out its own mythology at the moment.

“I think there are versions of it,” added Garcia. “We’re definitely focusing now though on building out our world. Obviously Shazam! does exist in the same universe as Black Adam and there are some other crossover elements you might feel in our movie. In terms of the details of how they all merge together though, is still in the works. But I think it’s safe to say that when Black Adam appears, no matter what universe you are in within the DC multiverse, you’re going to feel it!”

Black Adam will hit theaters on July 29, 2022.
