Xolo Maridueña In Negotiations To Headline Blue Beetle

After finding the lead for its Batgirl movie last month, HBO Max is closing on Blue Beetle. According to The Wrap, Xolo Maridueña is in talks to headline the film as Jamie Reyes a.k.a. Blue Beetle.

Maridueña is best known for his leading role as Miguel Diaz on Netflix’s Cobra Kai. However, he was previously one of the main cast members of NBC’s Parenthood. His other credits also include Major Crimes, the Rush Hour TV series, and the Twin Peaks revival.

Jamie Reyes is the third Blue Beetle in the comics, who made his debut in 2006. As envisioned by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, Jamie was an ordinary teenager living in El Paso, Texas. Regardless, chance encounter with an alien scarab transformed Jamie into an armored hero.

The scarab has self awareness and it communicates with Jamie’s mind after attaching itself to his body. When fully armored, Blue Beetle has enhanced speed and strength, as well as flight and also the ability to call upon other weapons as needed.

Jaren Brandt Bartlett previously played Jamie in the tenth season of Smallville. However, Jamie had a much larger role in the Young Justice animated series in the Injustice 2 video game.

Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer wrote the script for Blue Beetle, and Angel Manuel Soto will direct it. Production will likely begin next year.
