After hitting one roadblock after another over the last four years, Todd McFarlane’s long-gestating Spawn reboot is trying its luck with a new writer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brian Tucker is taking his own pass at McFarlane’s screenplay for the film.
Tucker’s only screenwriting credit is for Broken City, which starred Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe and hit theaters in 2013. Right now, he’s also working with Warner Bros. on their remake of The Fugitive. McFarlane’s initial Spawn draft was good enough to convince Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner to sign on to play the title character and Twitch Williams, respectively. It’s been a full year since Foxx last indicated that he was still attached to the project. Regardless, THR notes that a new script could secure his and Renner’s continued involvement.

McFarlane has been trying to bring Spawn back to the big screen since 2017, when he signed on to write and direct the movie himself. Unfortunately, getting a proper greenlight hasn’t been easy. McFarlane has frequently detailed his struggles to get financial backing for the film without having to sacrifice too much of his original vision. But clearly, he hasn’t given up hope yet. In addition to Spawn, McFarlane is also working on a Sam and Twitch spinoff TV series. Presumably, this will take place in the same universe as the reboot.
Jason Blum is still attached to produce Spawn through Blumhouse Productions. Carla Hacken is also onboard as an executive producer.
