After a successful maiden voyage, Disney’s Jungle Cruise is setting sail once again. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the studio has begun developing a sequel to this summer’s surprise hit. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are also set to reprise their roles as Frank Wolff and Lily Houghton, respectively.
Disney usually has mixed results when it comes to films based on their theme park rides. However, Jungle Cruise was a rare exception. The movie has received mostly positive reviews since it opened last month and has also done well at the box office. Just this weekend, it crossed $100 million domestically, bringing its worldwide total to $187 million. The film also made $30 million from its simultaneous release on Disney+ Premier Access.
Jungle Cruise co-writer Michael Green is coming back to write the script for Jungle Cruise 2. Additionally, Jaume Collet-Serra is expected to return as the sequel’s director. Collet-Serra recently re-teamed with Johnson on DC’s Black Adam, which finally wrapped production in July. John Davis, John Fox, Beau Flynn, Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia are also coming back as producers, with Scott Sheldon returning as an executive producer.

The chemistry between Johnson and Blunt’s characters was frequently cited by critics as one of Jungle Cruise’s greatest strengths. And aside from the upcoming sequel, they still have one more collaboration on the horizon. Both actors remain attached to Netflix’s Ball and Chain, based on the comic series about a bickering superhero couple.
Disney still hasn’t announced a release date for Jungle Cruise 2.
