New Details Emerge About Doctor Strange 2’s ‘Significant’ Reshoots

A few weeks ago, Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed that he would once again don Stephen Strange’s Cloak of Levitation for reshoots on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will last from November into December. And while announcements like these usually aren’t cause for concern, The Hollywood Reporter has clarified how much work is left to be done. Sources close to the film have described the ongoing reshoots as “significant.”

Aside from Cumberbatch, it’s not clear if any of the film’s other actors will be present for the reshoots. Regardless, the crew intends to work six days a week for at least six weeks. During this time, they plan to cover both “reshoots” and “additional photography.” Sam Raimi is also back in the director’s chair with screenwriter Michael Waldron penning some new material.

THR’s insiders are divided on what this means for the production. One source insisted that additional photography is normal for a film this big, and that “Even while in the middle of production, Marvel is scheduling you for more shooting.” Another insider claimed that “We’ve had bigger reshoots on other MCU movies.”

However, a third source was skeptical of these claims, especially given the reshoots’ lengthy timeframe. They remarked, “They’re here until the end of the year. That’s like a whole other movie.”

Other sources gave various reasons for the reshoots. According to one insider, two weeks are reserved for principal photography, particularly for scenes that couldn’t be completed during the initial shoot due to actor availability issues. That same source also dispelled any concerns that the filmmakers are using this time to retool the story. Plus, the film is making up for lost time caused by COVID-related shutdowns in the U.K., which also prompted Marvel’s decision to delay its entire 2022 slate last month.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6, 2022.
