Nearly two decades after it clawed its way into theaters, 2004’s Catwoman is still considered one of the worst examples of the superhero genre. And it’s also been called one of the worst movies ever made. The film featured virtually no ties to the DC Comics that inspired it, a creative decision that ultimately didn’t pay off in the long run. But it sounds like Berry wants to take another crack at Selina Kyle’s famous alter-ego. Halle Berry wants.
Berry has been acting for more than 30 years. But later this month, she is making her directorial debut with Netflix’s Bruised, in which she also stars. During a recent interview with Jake’s Takes about her first venture behind the camera, Berry was asked if she wishes she had the chance to direct any of her past movies.
“I would love to direct Catwoman,” said Berry. “[Laughs] If I can get a hold of that now, knowing what I know, having had this experience and reimagine that world the way I reimagined this story. Bruised was written for a white, Irish Catholic like 25-year-old girl, and I got to reimagine it. I wish I could go back and reimagine Catwoman and redo that, have a redo on that.”

Rather than adhere to the source material, Catwoman instead cast Berry as Patience Phillips, a timid cosmetics designer whose discovery of a conspiracy within her company leads her bosses to murder her. However, Patience was revived by an Egyptian cat that also granted her superhuman abilities to take revenge. Needless to say, this thin premise didn’t exactly do wonders for the film’s critical response. But if Berry was given a second chance, she would set the bar a little higher.
“I would have Catwoman saving the world,” added Berry. “Like most male superheroes do and not just saving women from their faces cracking off. You know, I would make the stakes a lot higher. And I think, make it more inclusive of both men and women.”
Berry has always been a good sport when it comes to Catwoman. In fact, she even accepted her own Razzie Awards for her performance in the film. At the 2005 ceremony, Berry brought her Oscar for Monster’s Ball onstage and thanked Warner Bros. for putting her “in a piece of s***, godawful movie.”
