Just one day after recruiting Nicolas Cage to play Count Dracula, Universal’s Renfield movie has added another big name to its cast. Deadline is reporting that Awkwafina will star opposite Cage and Nicholas Hoult in the upcoming film. However, the producers aren’t disclosing the nature of her role. Casts Awkwafina.
News of Awkwafina’s involvement comes on the heels of her leading role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Earlier this year, she also had a voice role in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon and starred in a second season of her Comedy Central series Awkwafina is Nora From Queens. Next up, she will appear alongside Mahershala Ali in Swan Song, which hits Apple TV+ later this month.
Renfield will put a unique spin on the Dracula legend by shifting the focus onto Hoult’s title character. In Bram Stoker’s original novel, R.M. Renfield was committed to an insane asylum because he was believed to be suffering from paranoid delusions. He was also obsessed with immortality and frequently dined on insects and small animals to consume their life force. But it was later revealed that Dracula promised Renfield the chance to live forever in exchange for doing his bidding.

The new film is one of several new monster movies that Universal currently has in the works. The studio is also developing new takes on The Wolfman and Van Helsing. Additionally, Chloé Zhao and Karyn Kusama are helming their own separate Dracula films as well.
Chris McKay is directing Renfield from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley and an original concept by Robert Kirkman. Universal hasn’t announced a release date.
