Warner Bros. has spent most of The Matrix Resurrections’ marketing campaign keeping plot details to a minimum. But with just over one week left until the film hits theaters, the studio is finally beginning to open up. A new featurette for Resurrections has made its way online, revealing how the latest installment celebrates the original film’s legacy while also pushing its characters in exciting new directions.
You won’t find any answers about how Neo and Trinity survived the events of The Matrix Revolutions. Instead, the featurette is loaded with cast commentaries and new footage from the highly-anticipated sequel. A few recent trailers have indicated that Resurrections serves as a meta commentary on the original Matrix by including clips from the game-changing 1999 film. But according to Keanu Reeves, the new film isn’t a re-telling–it’s a “new” telling.

Reeves goes on to confirm that Neo has reverted to his former identity of Thomas Anderson. He also reveals that Thomas suffered a nervous breakdown sometime in the last 18 years, hence his therapy sessions with Neil Patrick Harris’ mysterious Analyst. But everything changes when he reconnects with Trinity, who now goes by Tiffany. She also has a husband and kids. Neither of them remember the adventures in the Matrix. Regardless, they can’t help but think their reality isn’t what it seems. And as Carrie-Anne Moss explains, “Tiffany” still has her love of motorcycles.
Additionally, the clip touches on some of the new characters who will make their franchise debut in the film. Foremost among these is Jessica Henwick’s Bugs, who leads her a resistance cell that is searching for Neo to find answers to their own questions. All of the cast members also singled out the vision of director Lana Wachowski, with Reeves insisting that “you have to be a master filmmaker to make a film like this.”
The Matrix Resurrections hits theaters and HBO Max on December 22.
