There hasn’t been much word on any Valiant Comics adaptations since Sony’s Bloodshot movie arrived in 2020. But it looks like Paramount still intends to bring Harbinger to the big screen. Deadline is reporting that the studio has hired Wes Ball to direct the film.
Harbinger was previously set up at Sony as part of a five-picture deal that also included Bloodshot. The studio originally planned to develop its own cinematic universe made up of Valiant properties. But in late 2019, Harbinger moved to Paramount, leaving the idea of a shared universe in question. These plans were further hobbled when Bloodshot premiered almost two years ago. Not only did the film receive dismal reviews, it also opened at the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, which effectively crippled its box office returns. Regardless, Vin Diesel has said that a sequel is in development.
Writer (and Valiant co-founder) Jim Shooter launched Harbinger with artist David Lapham in 1992. The series follows a band of teenagers with extraordinary abilities as they rebel against the world’s most powerful superhuman, who wants to turn them into soldiers in his own private army. After its initial run concluded in 1995, Valiant resurrected the title in 2012 before ending it again in 2014.

Justin Tipping was the original choice to helm Harbinger back when Sony held the rights to the film. He was expected to remain with the project after it moved over to Paramount. However, it’s not clear when he vacated the director’s chair. Ball previously directed all three of 20th Century Fox’s Maze Runner films and remains attached to Disney’s next Planet of the Apes entry. He will direct Harbinger from a screenplay by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings co-writer Andrew Lanham.
