Sony’s Kraven the Hunter Adds Fred Hechinger in a Supporting Role

The cast of Sony’s upcoming Kraven the Hunter film continues to grow. According to Deadline, Fred Hechinger has booked a role in the movie opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s titular character. The identity of Hechinger’s character remains unconfirmed for now. But rumor has it that he might be playing Kraven’s half-brother, Dmitri Smerdyakov, better known as the Chameleon.

Hechinger had a big 2021 thanks to his performances in HBO’s The White Lotus and Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy. He currently has a recurring role in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy limited series. Some of his other credits include News of the World, The Woman in the Window, and Amazon’s The Underground Railroad.

The Chameleon was actually the very first villain that Peter Parker ever faced, making his grand debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 1963. He was introduced as a master of disguise who donned lifelike masks to imitate anyone he desired. Later issues would explore his relationship with Kraven when they were both children. Although they usually got along, Kraven would occasionally abuse his half-sibling, which led to some hostility between them as adults.

Like Kraven, the Chameleon has never been depicted in live-action. However, he has appeared in animated form on multiple occasions, showing up in both the ‘90s Spider-Man cartoon and 2008’s The Spectacular Spider-Man. Additionally, Patton Oswalt provided the character’s voice in Disney XD’s own Spider-Man series.

J.C. Chandor îs directing Kraven the Hunter from a screenplay by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk. Earlier this month, Russell Crowe joined the film’s cast in another mystery role. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are also producing the film.

Kraven the Hunter will hit theaters on January 13, 2023.
