Sydney Sweeney Joins the Cast of Sony’s Madame Web Movie

Last month, word broke that Sony Pictures is planning a Madame Web movie with Dakota Johnson in the leading role. Now, another major cast member is in place. According to The Wrap, Sydney Sweeney has joined the cast in an undisclosed role.

Sweeney is best known for her breakout role as Cassie Howard on HBO’s Euphoria opposite Zendaya, one of the leads in Sony’s MCU Spider-Man movies. Additionally, Sweeney has had supporting roles in HBO’s The White Lotus as well as Everything Sucks! on Netflix. She also had a small role as Dianne “Snake” Lake in Once Upon a Time In Hollywood.

Madame Web is one of the many Spider-Man-adjacent characters under Sony’s control. Not all of them are headliners, and Madame Web certainly falls into that category because she’s never even had her own comic book series. As envisioned by Denny O. Neil and artist John Romita Jr., Cassandra Webb was an elderly woman who had the gift of clairvoyance. She was also a supporting character in some of Spider-Man’s adventures, but never a leading heroine.

Given Cassandra’s advanced age, it’s far more likely that Johnson will portray her successor, Julia Carpenter. In Marvel’s comic book universe, Julia was the second Spider-Woman who made her debut in Jim Shooter and artist Mike Zeck’s Secret Wars miniseries. Unlike Cassandra, Julia has actually had a few comic book adventures of her own. She was also the heir to Cassandra’s mantle and powers after her death. However, those abilities cost Julia her eyesight and she retired from crime fighting after that.

S.J. Clarkson will direct Madame Web from a script by  Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Sony hasn’t set a date for the film yet, but it could begin production later this year.
