Tickets for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally went on sale this week. And in case anyone was doubting the hype for Benedict Cumberbatch’s next MCU adventure, Fandango (via Collider) is here to lay all of those doubts to rest. Just one day after pre-orders launched, the film has already broken the site’s first-day sales record for 2022. Doctor Strange 2 breaks.
Not even The Batman sold as many tickets on its first day as Marvel’s first blockbuster of the year. Which is surprising, considering that the average moviegoer had probably never heard of Stephen Strange’s mystical alter-ego before his first film in 2016. But now, Strange is outpacing the most popular superhero to ever hit the big screen. It also helps that the sequel follows up on Strange’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which smashed its own share of Fandango records when tickets went on sale last November.
“The epic first day of pre-sales for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness proves fans are beyond excited to experience all the thrills, chills and blockbuster surprises Marvel Studios is known to deliver,” said Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis in a new statement.

Many fans who bought tickets early are likely expecting the film’s journey into the multiverse to yield an abundance of big-screen surprises. And after No Way Home‘s surprising returns, who could blame them? The last trailer for Multiverse of Madness also featured the instantly-recognizable voice of Patrick Stewart, prompting speculation that he will reprise his role as Professor X from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. And that would definitely be an interesting way of bringing mutants into the MCU.
The latest news also bodes well for the movie’s box office. The original Doctor Strange made almost $678 million worldwide. But if the pre-sale numbers are any indication, the sequel seems primed to achieve an even bigger total.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 6.
