As Sonic the Hedgehog 2 continues to clean up at the box office, the next big Sega adaptation might not be far behind. According to Deadline, a Streets of Rage movie is currently in the works with Derek Kolstad writing the script.
Sega released the original Streets of Rage for the Genesis in 1991. The game was a side-scrolling beat ‘em up that cast players as one of three different ex-cops (Adam, Axel, and Blaze) who took on a criminal syndicate led by Mr. X. Two sequels followed in 1992 and 1994. After a lengthy hiatus, French developer Dotemu took control of the franchise and released Streets of Rage 4 in 2020.
Kolstad is best known for creating the John Wick franchise, and he has lent his talents to a number of action properties. He recently served as a writer and co-executive producer on Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Kolstad’s upcoming slate includes a new Dungeons & Dragons TV series and another show based on Joe Madureira’s Battle Chasers comic. His last film, Nobody, hit theaters last year.
