After more than a decade, James Cameron’s first Avatar sequel will definitely hit theaters later this year. And we finally know the official title. Taking the stage at CinemaCon earlier today, producer Jon Landau (via The Hollywood Reporter) announced that the next film is called Avatar: The Way of Water. He also screened footage from Cameron’s highly-anticipated return to Pandora, which featured familiar characters and dazzling new locations.
Donning 3D glasses, the audience at the Coliseum in Caesar’s Palace got an early look at what to expect from the Na’vi’s long-awaited return to movie theaters. Additionally, Cameron appeared in a video message from New Zealand, emphasizing the filmmakers’ mission to “push the limits to what cinema can do.”
The teaser trailer reportedly showed Jake Sully and Neytiri traveling across Pandora’s surface. Not surprisingly, the footage included several “gorgeous” shots of the planet’s oceans. Fans also got a taste of the underwater scenes that Cameron has been hyping ever since production began. In addition to the flying Toruks we saw in the first film, the trailer also featured Jake and Neytiri swimming with a pod of “whale-like creatures” as well.

“We need to make sure [audiences] have an experience they can’t get anywhere else,” said Landau. “And that needs to be exclusively in theaters.”
Thankfully, it won’t be much longer before the rest of us get our own glimpse at the film’s stunning visuals. Landau confirmed that The Way of Water’s first trailer will exclusively play before screenings of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which hits theaters next week. And because it isn’t enough that the original Avatar just reclaimed its box office crown from Avengers: Endgame, Landau also announced that Cameron’s first film is plotting a re-release on September 23 “with restored picture and sound.”
Avatar: The Way of Water will hit theaters on December 16.
