You don’t need more than two eyes to see that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a hit out of the gate. Not that we expected anything less. Via Deadline, today’s revised box office numbers place In the Multiverse of Madness at #1 with $187 million. Some industry observers predicted that it would come in closer to $200 million for the weekend. It didn’t reach those heights, but this is still the second-best opening weekend of the pandemic, after Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s $260 million opening last December. Additionally, the new Doctor Strange movie now has the 11th highest domestic opening of all-time.
It’s a testament to the power of the MCU brand that the Doctor Strange sequel handily beat The Batman‘s $134 million domestic opening. The Batman‘s box office may have been hindered by its nearly three hour runtime. Regardless, Marvel currently has the bragging rights for the highest North American opening of the year. And it looks like the only serious competition In the Multiverse of Madness will face this month will come from Top Gun: Maverick, a sequel that won’t open until May 27.

DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys fell to second place with $9.77 million, while Sonic the Hedgehog 2 added $6.2 million to reach third place and a new $169.9 million total. Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore tumbled more to number 4, with $3.95 million. That film currently has an $86 million domestic total, but it is likely to be the first Harry Potter-related film to finish under $100 million in North America.
The other multiverse movie at the box office, Everything Everywhere All at Once, rounded out the fifth slot with $3.3 million, and a very impressive $41.56 million total in limited release. The Northman followed at #6 with $2.77 million, while The Lost City added $2.5 million in seventh place. Nicolas Cage’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent came in at #8 with $1.525 million. In ninth place, Memory had a meager $1.22 million weekend, while Father Stu rounded out the top ten with $800 thousand.
