Eventually, however cryptic the marketing of a movie, the promotional material has to give up some sort of idea what the movie’s plot might be. Jordan Peele‘s Nope, until now, has depended on mystery, not unlike some J.J. Abrams-affiliated films like Cloverfield and Super8. But now the Nope final trailer gives us more of a clue just what’s going on. As initially suspected by most, it involves aliens. But more specifically, the intent to capture evidence of alien activity. Which in turn seems to motivate whatever’s out there to mess with those who’d provoke them.
And hey, cult ’90s character actor Michael Wincott is back! The gravelly voiced heavy from The Crow and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves shows up here to offer advice and experience, to the extent that he can. Proving the existence of UFOs could bring with it a big cash reward. But risking their wrath might not prove worth it in the end.

The official synopsis reads more oblique: “The film reunites Peele with Oscar® winner Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Judas and the Black Messiah), who is joined by Keke Palmer (Hustlers, Alice) and Oscar® nominee Steven Yeun (Minari, Okja) as residents in a lonely gulch of inland California who bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.” Some rumors suggest that NOPE could stand for Not Of Planet Earth, but given the fact that characters in the trailer say the word out loud, its meaning seems more banal than that.
Nope opens July 22. Will you go and see it? Let us know in comments.
