During Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy appeared to suggest that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie could come out in 2023. However, it may have been too optimistic to suggest that the writer and director of Thor: Love and Thunder was going to jump directly into his next genre movie. Via The Wrap, Waititi indicated that he is far from ready to start shooting his Star Wars film. In fact, the story hasn’t even been pinned down yet. Taika Waititi offers
When asked if his untitled Star Wars movie would begin filming this year, Waititi replied “Not this year. I’m going to be in New Zealand from August until the end of the year with Our Flag Means Death and Time Bandits. And during that time, I will still be writing. I’m still trying to figure out what the story is.”
If Waititi’s script is still in such an early stage of development, then even filming it next year may be asking for too much. Pre-production and casting can last a long time, and it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to rush this movie into theaters.

Waititi recently noted that he wants to “take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world [of Star Wars], otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story.” Beyond that, we don’t know where Waititi and Lucasfilm intend to place the film on the Star Wars timeline.
There is also the pressing question of which Star Wars film will be the next one to reach theaters. For reasons that have yet to be explained, Lucasfilm still has Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron movie listed for December 2023 despite the fact that the project has been on hold for seven months. The only other Star Wars movie on the horizon that we know about is the one being produced by Kevin Feige and directed by J.D. Dillard. For now, there’s no official date for that project either.
