Christian Bale Describes an ‘Extreme’ Scene Cut From Thor: Love and Thunder

Despite being a Disney subsidiary, Marvel isn’t afraid to get its hands dirty once in a while. The studio recently experimented with body horror in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and soon, Deadpool 3 will allow Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson to bring his R-rated brand of foul-mouthed ultraviolence to the MCU. However, there are still a few lines that the franchise isn’t willing to cross, and that’s why a particularly gruesome scene had to be cut from Thor: Love and ThunderChristian Bale describes.

The scene in question involved Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher. In the comics, Gorr was taught from an early age to trust in his people’s gods. But after years of seeing his prayers go unanswered, the death of his wife and children finally sent him over the edge, prompting him to embark on a one-man killing spree and slaughter all omnipotent beings throughout the universe. While speaking with IGN, Bale seemed to imply that Love and Thunder will also depict Gorr as a onetime man of faith. But when it came to showing his commitment to deicide, Marvel would only let him go so far.

“He’s a highly religious character at the beginning with tattoos displaying his piousness,” revealed Bale. “And then he becomes disillusioned with that, and then literally just mutilates himself to get rid of that.”

Bale didn’t specify how Gorr removed his tattoos in the scene. But whether he cut them off or burned them off, the character’s actions likely would have forced the MPA to reconsider Love and Thunder’s PG-13 rating. In any case, Bale doesn’t seem to be too disappointed by the scene’s removal.

“It was perhaps a little bit too extreme to be included in the film,” added Bale. “But there was a lot of wonderful stuff that we shot. But you know that as an actor. You always know, hey, you’re going to experiment. Some things can work, some things don’t, and we want this to be a family film. My kids love it.”

Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on July 8.
