It took 13 years for James Cameron to revisit the world of Pandora in Avatar: The Way of Water. But it won’t be as long between movies for the third film. According to a new interview with Empire, Cameron states that Avatar 3 is already in the can. However, Cameron also suggested that he may not return to direct Avatar 4 and 5.
“The Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming,” said Cameron. “I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting. I think eventually over time – I don’t know if that’s after three or after four – I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.”
Cameron also expressed some uncertainty that 20th Century Studios will go forward with the fourth and fifth films. It all depends on whether The Way of Water is successful at the box office. Regardless, Cameron is excited about the story he has already laid out for the final sequels.

“Movie four is a corker. It’s a motherf***er,” exclaimed Cameron. “I actually hope I get to make it. But it depends on market forces. Three is in the can so it’s coming out regardless. I really hope that we get to make four and five because it’s one big story, ultimately.”
After such a long time between Avatar 1 and 2, it remains to be seen if The Way of Water will resonate with moviegoers. We’ll find out when it hits theaters on December 16, 2022. 20th Century Studios has tentatively scheduled Avatar 3 for December 20, 2024, with Avatar 4 on December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028.
