After the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is officially the new Captain America in the MCU. And now, the new Cap is getting a new director for his next adventure. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Julius Onah has signed on to direct Captain America 4.
Onah is a Nigerian-American filmmaker whose biggest film to date was The Cloverfield Paradox, which was released on Netflix in 2018. Onah’s other credits include feature films The Girl Is In Trouble and Luce. Deadline notes that Onah received “strong notices” and award nominations for Luce in 2019, which probably offset the poor critical response to the Cloverfield sequel.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier writers Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson are penning the script for the sequel. But Mackie is the only cast member officially on board. It’s also unclear if Sebastian Stan will be back as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier.

For now, Marvel hasn’t revealed which villains the new Cap will face, or where Sam’s story will go next. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier went a long way towards establishing a working relationship between Sam and Bucky, so it doesn’t necessarily make sense to split them up now. However, it was recently reported that Stan may appear in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie.
Marvel Studios will have a big presence at Comic-Con in two weeks, so it’s possible we will learn more about the sequel there. For now, Captain America 4 doesn’t have a release date, or a production schedule.
