The Russo Bros. Express Interest In Helming Batman For DC Studios

While director Matt Reeves will continue his Dark Knight story in The Batman – Part II, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-CEOs of DC Studios, have already made it clear that they have Batman plans of their own. Back in January, Gunn and Safron announced that The Brave and the Bold would be a Batman film that will mark the big-screen debut of Bruce Wayne’s son, Damian Wayne, as the new Robin. And while that movie doesn’t have a director yet, former MCU directors Anthony and Joe Russo are already expressing their interest in helming the film.

While speaking with ComicBook, the Russos stressed that they have not been asked to direct The Brave and the Bold or any Batman project. But they didn’t bother to hide their desire to take it on.

“Obviously James [Gunn] over there running it, it would be a no-brainer,” said Joe Russo. “We love him to death. We love the direction he’s going to take that world in. You know he’s gonna be inventive with it. And favorite DC characters? I mean, man. There are so many good ones. I  always answer based on the comics I collected as a kid, and the two comics I collected the most were Spider-Man — actually, the three —  were Spider-Man. X-Men and Batman. But there have been a lot of iterations of Batman, so I feel like that’s an obvious answer.”

“But, you know, it’s hard not to answer that,” added Anthony Russo. “Here’s how you know we haven’t actually gotten literal about it and specific about it is because, yeah, Batman would be my favorite character for my entire childhood. But obviously, it’s been well explored.”

The Russo brothers largely made their name on TV while directing episodes of various shows including Arrested Development and Community. After helming Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014 to great acclaim, Marvel lined up the Russos for Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Since then, the Russos have largely worked on their own projects for Netflix and Amazon Studios.
