Though he’s appeared in all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Howard the Duck has looked different each time. Director James Gunn took to Twitter to explain why the character has had a few redesigns during his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Why did Howard the Duck’s design change in each Guardians of the Galaxy movie?
One fan on Twitter asked Gunn if redesigning Howard the Duck was his idea, noting that the character looks “much better” in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The director confirmed this in his response, saying he redesigned Howard on every movie because he’s “never been satisfied” and was “rushed the first couple times.” He finished by noting that he’s happier with the look now.
A separate Twitter user asked if the filmmaker ever considered using the infamously panned 1986 live-action Howard the Duck movie’s design for the character. Gunn responded with a concise, “No.”
Another user tweeted at Gunn and asked if he ever thought about giving Howard the Duck a bigger role in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The director replied, “Yes,” which confirms fans could have seen some form of expanded Howard role.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was directed by James Gunn and was released in theaters on May 5. The sequel heavily features the backstory of Rocket — the armed and snarky raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper — and his history with the film’s villain, The High Evolutionary (played by Chukwudi Iwuji). Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters.
