Groot’s Final Line in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Explained by James Gunn

Groot’s final line in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is emotionally significant at face value, but director James Gunn has confirmed a theory that makes that moment even more touching.

Did James Gunn imply that audiences can now understand Groot’s final line?

Towards the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel, Groot says, “I love you guys” — a departure from his usual dialogue of “I am Groot.” James Gunn has confirmed that this isn’t actually Groot vocalizing the words “I love you guys,” but rather, the moment signifies that the audience has spent enough time with the Guardians and Groot to be able to understand what he is saying.

The theory was posted by i09, then backed-up by Gunn on Twitter when a user tagged him and hoped it was true. The filmmaker left no room for doubt in his reply, saying, “Spoiler…. Yes that’s exactly what it means.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was directed by James Gunn and was released in theaters on May 5. The sequel heavily features the backstory of Rocket — the armed and snarky raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper — and his history with the film’s villain, The High Evolutionary (played by Chukwudi Iwuji). Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters.
