Ghostbusters: Afterlife Star Confirms Sequel Is Wrapped, But Likely Delayed

Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson has revealed that the sequel to 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife has wrapped, though may not make its planned release date.

In an interview with Screen Rant to promote his latest film, Prisoner’s Daughter, Hudson gave an update on the status of the latest Ghostbusters installment. While Hudson confirmed that the London-set production of the new Ghostbusters film had concluded, he also said that the ongoing writers’ strike, as well as a potential actors’ strike, could impact when it hits theaters. Sony has not confirmed a release date delay at this time.

Ernie Hudson casts doubt on Ghostbusters 4’s December 2023 release

“Yeah, we finished, the movie is done, it’s wrapped. Obviously, they’re editing and doing whatever else. I’ve heard rumors the end of the year they’ll push for, or maybe spring next year,” Hudson said. “I never know how the studios are gonna do whatever they do, but the filming is done, which was a little bit difficult with the writers’ strike and everything going on. So, I know there was a lot of shuffling around in terms of where it was being done, but I’m thankful that we at least got it done in the can, and now, I’m like everybody else, waiting to see what it all looks like.”

Currently under the working title “Firehouse,” the latest Ghostbusters movie will continue the story that began with Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Directed by Jason Reitman, Afterlife centered on Egon Spengler’s family moving to the recently departed Ghostbuster’s abandoned home in Oklahoma, encountering supernatural forces identical to the ones from the original 1984 film. Met with mixed reviews upon release, Afterlife was a financial success, earning $204.4 million worldwide on a budget of $75 million.

+Afterlife co-writer Gil Kenan takes over the director reigns from Reitman for the upcoming sequel, which reunites stars Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard. In addition to Hudson, original Ghostbusters stars Dan Aykroyd, and Annie Potts will reprise their roles as well. New additions to the cast include Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, Miko Hughes, and Emily Alyn Lind.

The untitled Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel is currently slated for release on Dec. 20.
