Nia DaCosta, director of Marvel Studios‘ The Marvels, won’t give anything away about the film before it’s released on Friday. However, she’s well aware of a subtle cue that might hint at the X-Men arriving in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which fans noticed in the latest trailer.
In an interview with Jake’s Takes, DaCosta was asked about the trailer, in which the words “Be there for what comes next” appeared on the screen, with the “X” being the last letter to fade away. The dialogue in the trailer referenced “a different reality bleeding into ours,” and Samuel L. Jackson‘s Nick Fury is heard saying “They’re here” during the moment with the fading X. “What was your reaction when you saw that?” asked Jake Hamilton, to which DaCosta replied with a laugh, “I was just like, ‘Oh, so cheeky. So cheeky.'”
There’s a chance that The Marvels will introduce the X-Men
The X-Men are a superhero team of mutants which includes some of Marvel Comics’ most beloved characters. Although they have appeared in quite a few modern feature films, due to copyright issues it wasn’t possible until recent years for them to cross over with characters from the MCU. Therefore, fans have been eagerly anticipating their first appearance and closely watching announcements about new projects in the MCU.
So far, there have been some references to the X-Men property, such as Iman Vellani‘s Ms. Marvel being dubbed a “mutant” in her series of the same name. Actors from the X-Men movies have also made MCU cameos, and Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman will play a major role in Deadpool 3.
Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel return for a team-up
The Marvels serves as a sequel not only to 2019’s Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, but also to Ms. Marvel. The third member of the titular team, Monica Rambeau/Photon, was introduced as a child in Captain Marvel. Teyonah Parris took up the mantle as an older Monica in the 2021 miniseries WandaVision,
DaCosta directs The Marvels from a script she co-wrote with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik. In addition to the main trio, the film’s cast includes many new and returning MCU stars such as Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn, Park Seo-joon, Lashana Lynch, Randall Park, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, and Saagar Shaikh.
