The Marvels Nia DaCosta middling reviews

The Marvels Director Responds to Reports of ‘Dramatic’ Departure in Post-Production

The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has pushed back on a Variety piece about her supposed exit while the Marvel Studios movie was in post-production.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, DaCosta responded to the controversial story in Variety titled “Crisis at Marvel.” The article claimed that The Marvels director had moved on to her next movie — Hedda, starring Tessa Thompson (Thor: Love and Thunder) — while her Marvel Cinematic Universe project was still being edited. Now DaCosta revealed that while the initial “two-year” process in working on the upcoming MCU installment became “a three-and-a-half year process” as a result of studio delays, her change in project commitment was greatly exaggerated.

“They knew the entire time that I had an obligation — a green-lit movie with people who were waiting for me. And I pushed that and then I pushed it again and then I pushed it again. Eventually, we all knew that if [The Marvels] pushes again, I’m not going to be in LA to do the rest of this in person,” DaCosta said. “By the time I left to start prep on my next film, everyone was so clear about what the film was, what we wanted. It really wasn’t this dramatic sort of thing people are thinking it is.”

What is The Marvels about?

Directed by DaCosta, The Marvels continues the story of the events from 2019’s Captain Marvel and 2022’s Ms. Marvel series on Disney+. Its premise sees Monica Rambeau (WandaVision’s Teyonah Parris) investigating an intergalactic wormhole when her powers become entangled with those of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani). The film co-stars Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, and Samuel L. Jackson.

The Marvels hits theaters on November 10.
