Edgar Wright has shared a few details regarding what his version of Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man would have looked like.
On Instagram, Wright was asked if there were any details he could reveal about what his version of Ant-Man would’ve looked like. Wright originally worked on developing Ant-Man for Marvel for many years but dropped out in May 2014 due to creative differences.
Wright said, “Having signed an NDA when I left, there’s not a lot I can say. I guess the biggest (pun intended) differences in our screenplay was it was self-contained and didn’t have cameos from other MCU characters (apart from an end tease) and it was much more of a crime heist movie, with interlocking robberies and heists throughout, a little like Donald Westlake’s The Hot Rock.”
Wright’s Ant-Man would’ve painted Scott Lang as an ‘actual criminal’
Wright continued, “I think the crucial difference too was that (like the original comics) Scott Lang was an actual criminal at the start of the film and not already a 100 percent good guy. We felt it was a more satisfying redemption arc if he went from criminal to hero. Lots more to say, but can’t for legal reasons!”
Peyton Reed was hired to helm Ant-Man after Wright dropped out of the project. The MCU movie opened in United States theaters in July 2015 and made $519.3 million at the worldwide box office. Starring Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, the movie went on to spawn two sequels, 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp and 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Wright, meanwhile, went on to direct 2017’s Baby Driver after leaving Ant-Man. Following that, he made The Sparks Brothers documentary and the Ana Taylor-Joy-starring Last Night in Soho in 2021. He recently served as an executive producer on Netflix’s Scott Pilgrim Takes Off animated television series.
