Iman Vellani recently discussed the future of the Young Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — as well as the potential for Ms. Marvel to team-up with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in a future project.
Speaking with The Direct, Vellani opened up about the Young Avengers tease at the end of The Marvels, although she was hesitant to reveal which other young heroes almost appeared in the scene.
“I don’t know. I don’t know what the rules are for scenes that were cut, like, am I still supposed to keep those secrets,” Vellani asked. “I’ll say, whatever names you can guess are probably right. Like, there’s not that many young people in the MCU right now.”
Who could be part of the Young Avengers?
In The Marvels, Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Vellani) recruits Kate Bishop/Hawkeye (Hailee Steinfeld) to be part of her new superhero team while hinting that Cassie Lang/Stature (Kathryn Newton) is also being eyed for the lineup.
Other young superheroes currently active in the MCU include Riri Williams/Ironheart (Dominique Thorne), America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), Skaar (Wil Deusner), and Kid Loki (Jack Veal), as well as Wanda Maximoff and Vision’s twin boys Billy (Julian Hillard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne).
Eli Bradley/Patriot, a member of the Young Avengers in the comics, has also been introduced in the MCU, played by Elijah Richardson in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. However, at this time, it is unknown if he shares the same abilities as his comic book counterpart.
Vellani also stated that she would love to work with Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) on a future MCU project, admitting, “I would love to see a team-up [with Spider-Man]. Their team-ups in the comics are honestly one of my favorites. So, that would be cool.”
Will Kamala’s team go by Young Avengers or Champions?
Young Avengers is not the only superhero team in the Marvel Comics Universe that is made up of younger heroes. In 2016, Marvel introduced the Champions, a team of teenage superheroes that included Ms. Marvel, Sam Alexander/Nova, Miles Morales/Spider-Man, and Viv Vision, with Ironheart, Moon Girl, and Silk joining in later issues.
When asked if Ms. Marvel’s team might go by the Champions instead of the Young Avengers, Vellani was unsure how the MCU fandom might respond to such a change. “That’s funny. I don’t know. I don’t think I am a part of that decision-making,” she admitted. “But I personally like Champions, mostly because I read those comics more, but I don’t know how the fan base would respond to that name.”
Fans can currently watch Vellani as Ms. Marvel in Season 1 of her self-titled show on Disney+ or in theaters with The Marvels.
